Beginning Cold Process Soapmaking

February 4 10 to 1pm

Santa Rosa Junior College

Calling all crafters, here is your new passion! Soapmaking is part art, part science and completely addicting. This hands on class will show you step by step how to make a batch of cold process soap from scratch. This traditional soapmaking method relies on saponification, or the chemical reaction of fatty acids with an alkali, to produce long-lasting natural soap bars. We will thoroughly cover the ingredients required, tools needed, and how to safely work with sodium hydroxide at home. We will also talk about different essentials oils you can use to scent soap, types of oils you can use and their unique characteristics, and ways to color your soaps.

After an instructor-led demonstration shows how to make soap from start to almost-finish, we will end with a small hands-on portion, where you will get to pour and scent your own one pound batch to take home. Please bring an old hand or bath towel to wrap your soap, and wear long sleeves and long pants. You’ll then cut and cure the bars at home, and have your own handcrafted soaps to enjoy afterwards!
